The pressurizer has the basic functions: pressurization during startup; maintaining normal RCS pressure during operation; limiting RCS pressure changes during transients; and preventing overpressure.

If the Reactor Coolant System were operated completely full of water or “solid”, any change in temperature would produce unacceptably large changes in pressure due to the density change of the coolant. The pressurizer provides a surge and makeup volume to accommodate these density changes.

The pressurizer is a vertical, cylindrical vessel with hemispherical top and bottom heads. Electrical heaters are installed through the bottom head while the spray nozzle, relief valve and safety valve connections are located in the top head of the pressurizer.
